- Rejuva Therapy: An innovative gene therapy, Rejuva is a treatment that works by restoring GLP-1 function in the pancreas. It’s still in preclinical development, but the company behind it, Fractyl Health, hopes to start studies on humans soon.
- Sulforaphane: Research about this compound found in broccoli and its powerful impacts on blood sugar has been happening for the past few years (like the 2017 study which found that sulforaphane improved glucose control in patients with type 2 diabetes). 2024 is taking the powers of this natural compound even further, though — a new study found that dietary intake of sulforaphane can enhance glucose tolerance, as well as suppress fat accumulation. More research is needed, but what has been found is promising for treatment.
- Continuous Glucose Monitors: Medical manufacturer Dexcom has announced a new continuous glucose monitor (CGM), Stelo, which is meant to be worn by people who don’t take insulin. This CGM will be available over-the-counter, which could be a game-changer for those with prediabetes or a family history. CGM offers real-time blood sugar readings which can help identify foods and stimuli to be cautious of. Another new CGM on the scene is Roche’s Accu-Chek SmartGuide, which uses AI technology to deliver a more comprehensive monitoring solution to both people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
